Solitude
Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone.
For the sad old earth must borrow it's mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air.
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.
Rejoice, and men will seek you;
Grieve, and they turn and go.
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not need your woe.
Be glad, and your friends are many;
Be sad, and you lose them all.
There are none to decline your nectared wine,
But alone you must drink life's gall.
Feast, and your halls are crowded;
Fast, and the world goes by.
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,
But no man can help you die.
There is room in the halls of pleasure
For a long and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on
Through the narrow aisles of pain.

웃어라, 그럼 세상이 너와 함께 웃으리라.
울어라, 그럼 너 혼자만 울게 되리라.
슬프게도 이 낡은 세상은 스스로의 웃음을 빌려오려 하지만,
이미 이 세상은 그 스스로의 문제로 가득하다.
노래하라, 그럼 언덕이 화답하리라.
탄식하라, 그럼 허공으로 흩어지리라.
메아리는 즐거운 소리에 울려퍼지지만,
근심스런 소리에 사라져버린다.
환희하라, 그럼 사람들이 너를 찾으리라.
비통하라, 그럼 사람들이 너를 떠나리라.
사람들은 너의 충만한 기쁨을 원하지만,
너의 애통함은 찾지 않을 것이다.
기뻐하라, 그럼 너의 친구들이 늘어나리라.
슬퍼하라, 그럼 너는 그들을 모두 잃으리라.
누구도 너의 감미로운 와인은 거절하지 않지만,
인생의 쓴 잔은 너 홀로 마셔야한다.
잔치하라, 그럼 너의 집은 사람으로 넘치리라.
굶주려라, 그럼 세상은 너를 그냥 지나가리라.
네가 성공과 베풂으로 삶의 의미를 찾을 수 있지만,
너의 죽음은 그 누구도 도울 수 없다.
즐거움의 저택은 매우 넓어서
길고 웅장한 행렬을 들일 수 있지만,
우리가 좁은 고통의 통로를 지날 때에는
모두 한 사람씩 지나가야만 한다. |
